Cheeseman Canyon - Not Illegal and Doesn't Suck

Kayaking is not a crime. Just saying that phrase makes me giggle. As a thirteen year old skate grom I had the sticker, the t-shirt and the mantra. But that was skateboarding - the counter-culture champion of the early 90’s, before the X-games, the Mountain Dew sponsorship and the two skateparks in every town. A lot of times we really were trespassing… but that’s not the point. We were just kids trying to have fun and do some j’s along the way. We wanted to railslide and security guards be damned. Not much has changed I guess, except for - we’re grown men, we’re dealing with the sheriff and we’re not actually trespassing.

Sportsman’s Paradise has somewhat effectively regulated downstream access into Cheeseman, otherwise known as Wildcat Canyon, for some time now. It started with a trash rack that would force paddlers into a trespass portage situation and then while you were out of your boat the sheriff might just arrest you. The charges would be dropped and recently, on the sound advice of the Park County District Attorney, the trash rack has been removed. Now paddlers can stay in their boats throughout the entire stretch of Sportsman’s property, despite the SP security guard, ur, I mean sheriff waving from shore. So really it’s that easy and kayaking is not a crime cause they can’t own the river and they can’t deny the public access to the *public* lands downstream. Just stay in your boats through SP property and no harm will come to you.

Follow the rules of the good faith deal negotiated by Tim Kelly and posted on the American Whitewater website HERE. These are our rivers so let’s protect them and keep our access legal by taking an active role, whether that means volunteering for your local conservation organization, lobbying for change or by just sending your money to American Whitewater (you can do that HERE). Cheeseman Canyon is an excellent expert run but preserving the access to this incredible canyon is in all paddler’s interest. Have fun on the river and remember that whatever we can give back to river we should because it will probably never compare to what the river has already given us. Check out this VIDEO for proof that Cheeseman is worth the battle.
